Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for Immigration and Study
What Is an ECA?
An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) is a report that compares your foreign education credentials to Canadian standards. It states the Canadian equivalent of your degree or diploma (e.g., "Bachelor's degree (four years)" or "Master's degree"). IRCC requires an ECA for Express Entry if you're applying through the Federal Skilled Worker Program or to claim points for education obtained outside Canada. It's also often required for provincial nominee programs and some study permit applications when your previous education is from another country.
Designated Organizations
IRCC designates specific organizations to perform ECAs: **World Education Services (WES)** is the most commonly used and often the fastest. **International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS)** in Alberta, **International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES)** in BC, **Comparative Education Service (CES)** at the University of Toronto, and **Medical Council of Canada** (for physicians) are other designated bodies. Each has different processing times and fees. Choose one and use it consistently—IRCC generally accepts only one ECA per credential.
Processing Time and Validity
ECA processing typically takes 4–8 weeks depending on the organization and your country of education. Rush services may shorten this. Order official transcripts and degree certificates from your institution and have them sent directly to the ECA provider. ECAs are typically valid for five years for Express Entry, but always confirm current IRCC policy. If your ECA expires, you'll need a new one to update your profile.
