Global Talent Stream: Fast Work Permits for Skilled Workers

What Is the Global Talent Stream?

The Global Talent Stream (GTS) is a fast-track pathway under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. It helps Canadian employers hire highly skilled foreign workers when Canadians or permanent residents are not available. The key benefit: work permit processing in as little as **two weeks** (standard processing can take months). Employers must pay a fee and meet program requirements. GTS is designed for tech companies, innovative firms, and employers in high-growth sectors. It has been instrumental in helping Canadian tech hubs attract global talent.

Two Categories

**Category A** is for employers referred by a designated partner (e.g., a tech association or innovation hub). The partner attests that the employer is scaling up and needs unique talent. The employer must demonstrate efforts to recruit Canadians first.

**Category B** is for occupations on the GTS occupations list. These include software engineers, computer systems analysts, web designers, electrical and electronics engineers, and other in-demand roles. The employer doesn't need a partner referral but must still meet labour market impact assessment (LMIA) requirements, which are streamlined for GTS. Wages must meet the prevailing wage or the employer's median wage for the occupation.

From Work Permit to PR

A GTS work permit gives you Canadian work experience. After one year of skilled Canadian experience, many workers qualify for the **Canadian Experience Class** under Express Entry. Others may receive a provincial nomination if their occupation is in demand. The GTS is a bridge—it gets you into Canada quickly, and from there you can build toward permanent residence. Keep your Express Entry profile updated and consider improving your language score to maximize your CRS.
