Minimum IELTS Score For Express Entry in 2025

Minimum IELTS Score For Express Entry in 2025

Language Requirements by Program

There is no single minimum IELTS score for Express Entry—requirements vary by program. For the **Federal Skilled Worker Program**, you need a minimum of CLB 7 in all four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) if your occupation is NOC TEER 0 or 1. For NOC TEER 2 or 3, the minimum is CLB 5. The **Canadian Experience Class** requires CLB 7 for NOC 0 or A, and CLB 5 for NOC B. The **Federal Skilled Trades Program** requires CLB 5 for speaking and listening, and CLB 4 for reading and writing. Meeting the minimum makes you eligible; exceeding it boosts your CRS.

CLB and IELTS Equivalents

For IELTS General Training: CLB 7 equals 6.0 in each skill; CLB 8 equals 6.5 in listening and 6.5 in the other three; CLB 9 equals 7.0 in listening and 7.0 in the others; CLB 10 equals 7.5 in listening and 8.0 in the others. CELPIP-G and TEF/TCF Canada have their own CLB conversion tables. Higher language scores can add dozens of CRS points—often the difference between receiving an ITA or waiting indefinitely.

Maximizing Your Score

Improving your language results is one of the few levers you can pull after creating your profile. Age and years of experience may be fixed in the short term, but retaking IELTS or CELPIP can significantly increase your CRS. Even a 0.5 band improvement per skill can add 20–30 points. If you're close to the cut-off, investing in language preparation can be the most effective strategy. Bilingual candidates (English and French) can earn additional points—consider adding French if it's feasible.
